The caretaker at an isolated mountain hotel finds herself fighting for her life—and sanity—in this twisty, addictive thriller.
Kerry’s life is in shambles: Her husband has left her, her drinking habit has officially become a problem, and though the deadline for her big book deal—the one that was supposed to change everything—is looming, she can’t write a word. When she sees an ad for a caretaker position at a revitalized roadside motel in the Catskills, she jumps at the chance. It's the perfect getaway to finish her book and start fresh.
But as she hunkers down in a blizzard, she spots something through the window: a pale arm peeking out from a heap of snow. Trapped in the mountains and alone with a dead, frozen body, Kerry must keep her head and make it out before the killer comes for her too. But is the deadly game of cat-and-mouse all in her mind? The body count begs to differ . . .

When Kerry applied to be the off-season caretaker at the Twilite Motel, she hoped it would be her "own little Overlook Hotel" la Stephen King's The Shining--a remote, snowy oasis, minus the murder and mayhem, of course. She desperately needs some isolation to overcome her writer's block and finish the book that was supposed to be her big break. Her references to The Shining become a bit too real, however, when she discovers a body in the snow behind the motel. By the time the police arrive, the body has vanished, and Kerry begins to wonder if maybe the Twilite isn't as isolated as she thought. Konen (Keep Your Friends Close) crafts a fast-paced psychological thriller full of twists and horror film references. Narrators Karissa Vacker, Erin Bennett, and Julie Webster give emotive and engaging performances, enhancing the characters' panic and fear. The trio turns the intricate and unreliable narrative into a creepy, compelling listening experience. VERDICT This audio will appeal to listeners seeking a shocking psychological thriller about women's friendship and betrayal. Recommended for fans of Ruth Ware, Riley Sager, and Lisa Unger.--Lauren Hackert

Three narrators--Karissa Vacker, portraying anxious Kerry; Erin Bennett, portraying determined Siobhan; and Julie Webster, voicing upbeat Alison--take on this tale of horror. When Kerry arrives midwinter at an empty Catskills motel supposedly vacated by Siobhan that morning, she's confronted with two feet of snow and a dead body. Later, when the body disappears, Kerry, an anxious drug- and alcohol- addicted writer, slowly unravels. Is Siobhan dead, or is the body that of their friend Alison, who was visiting? Who killed her? Never interacting, the narrators, capably deliver their character's chapters. Nothing is what it seems in this creepy winter mystery. M.B.K. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine
